The Sheaths of Human Mind

Hiranyamaya Kosha (golden/spiritual):This sheath is the place where the person enjoys the highest spiritual bliss from the pure expression of existential joy. This sheath is as close to the Divine as we can get without loosing the sense of individuality.

Vigyanamaya Kosha (subliminal/intuitive): This is the layer of spiritual discrimination, non-attachment, ego boundaries and personal strength. In this sheath the person feel to have similar form to the Divine.

Atimanas Kosha (supra-mental/creative): In this sheath all the yet-unexpressed seeds for future actions (and past debts) are stored. It is the layer of creativity. The person who has control of this layer is known to be a genius. Here the solutions to problems come in a flash without intellectual deliberation.

Manomaya Kosha (subtle mental/intellectual): The space of memory, contemplation, experience of pain and pleasure and dreaming. Intelligent people have a good control over this layer. Therefore, this sheath is known to most intellectuals.

Kamamaya Kosha (crude mental/instinctual): This layer senses the external stimuli through sense organs, craves for objects of enjoyment and acts to materialize the desires through motor organs and mental propensities (vrittis). Therefore, it is the place of desire.

Annamaya Kosha (physical body): This sheath is the material body with its organs, i.e. liver, lungs, endocrine glands, hands, legs, etc.
