Question: They say that a child is born innocent. What if he or she gets the soul of a Hitler or Stalin? — This is, indeed, a back-breaking burden!

Comment: The idea that a child is born innocent is erroneous. This idea stems from a superstition that life begins with physical birth. The life of the present body, of course, begins with birth but the life of the soul and of the mind associated with it is much older. The child is not born innocent but already carries with him or her the memory-burden of all previous activities (sam’skara) from the past lives. Frequently we wonder why troubles like a winter storm pour down on a goodhearted neighbor while the jerk across the street comes to more and more riches without effort. Actions have their origins in the past even if our mind does not remember or does not know their causes. In deep meditation you can have a direct experience of your past lives and, thus, know the hidden causes of your present fate. Even though we may have to wait a long time for the harvest, whatever we sow that we will reap, sooner or later.

Children are pure in the sense that their thoughts are not yet complicated by adult life. But they already carry in themselves the seeds of their future occupation, coming problems, luxurious, poor or criminal life. Very early on, one can see the personality that a child is born with. If the parents are spiritual people then they can find out much about the child even before birth via deep meditation during pregnancy. One way or another, the practice of meditation during pregnancy will help the soul that is entering material life anew to begin it with tranquillity, bliss and God. Spiritual efforts before and after conception will attract a more developed soul to your family. And not only will you help this being, he or she may significantly accelerate your path.
